What You’re Feeling Is Intense — But It Can Shift Without Them Talking to You

What you’re feeling is intense — but it can shift

By Jeremy · Founder, Back To Self

The pain you’re feeling is real. The checking, the heaviness in your chest, the inability to focus and the sense that nothing will feel okay until they talk to you again. But this state is not permanent, and it doesn’t require the other person to come back, explain themselves or finally say the perfect thing.

What you may be experiencing is called attachment activation.

This isn’t a diagnosis. It’s a useful name for the state your system enters when an important connection feels threatened, uncertain or suddenly unavailable.

When your whole world gets pulled into the connection

When you’re activated, the connection stops feeling like one part of your life. It starts feeling like the doorway back into your life.

It can look like this

You wake up and check whether they’ve been online.

You replay the last conversation, looking for the moment everything changed.

You write messages, delete them, rewrite them and wonder whether silence is pushing them further away.

Food becomes harder to eat. Work becomes harder to focus on. The things that normally bring you pleasure suddenly feel flat.

Part of you knows you’re spiralling. Another part is convinced that one conversation with them would fix everything.

Your mind starts treating their reply like medicine. It tells you that you need clarity, reassurance or contact before you can settle.

That doesn’t mean you’re weak. It means your attachment system has identified the relationship as a source of safety — and now believes that safety has been removed.

The feeling is real. The conclusion may not be.

Attachment activation creates urgency.

It can tell you that you’ve lost the only person who will ever understand you. That the connection was your one chance. That you must act now before they forget you, replace you or decide they never cared.

The intensity of the feeling is not proof that you need to act on it.

Your pain deserves attention. But the story the pain is producing may not be the truth.

This is one of the hardest parts of the spiral (link this and other spiral words): learning to honour what you’re feeling without automatically obeying what the activation tells you to do.

You don’t need them to participate in your healing

In the activated state, it can feel as though the other person holds the key.

If they would just call, explain what happened, acknowledge the connection or finally let you express everything you’ve been holding, then perhaps your body could settle.

Contact may provide temporary relief. But if your regulation depends entirely on their availability, every future change in their tone, attention or closeness can reopen the same wound. – and you re-enter the loop (linkthis)

The deeper shift is realising that the activation is happening inside your system. That means it can be worked with inside your system.

You can move from:

“I’m a mess. I can’t focus. Nothing feels okay.”

toward:

“Today is a good day. The sun is shining. My life still exists, and hope exists inside it.”

That doesn’t mean the connection no longer matters. It means it no longer has to control your entire existence.

Understanding helps — but sometimes you need to be witnessed

ChatGPT can help you make sense of the pattern. It can help you organise your thoughts, recognise anxious attachment and understand why the other person may have pulled away.

That can be genuinely valuable. Sometimes naming what is happening reduces the panic.

But there is a difference between understanding the experience intellectually and being witnessed inside it by another human who actually gets it.

Sometimes what has been trapped inside you needs somewhere to go.

The needs you weren’t allowed to communicate. The anger you judged yourself for having. The grief beneath the checking. The part of you that wanted to say:

I needed consistency. I needed to know where I stood. I needed to feel that the connection mattered to you too.

Being able to express those needs in a safe space — without chasing the person who triggered them — can begin returning your voice to you.

What actually helps the activation shift

Seperate Story from Mechanism

Instead of “my life is falling apart,” begin with: “My attachment system is activated right now.”

Feel the discomfort fully

Instead of living in the mind looking at the possibilities of why they aren’t in contact, feel the discomfort in your body.

Separate the person from the need

They may have activated the need, but they may not be the person to meet that need…you might be 😉

Meet the parts you normally reject

This is where shadow work takes things deeper: making space for the dependent, angry, grieving or frightened parts of you instead of trying to become less needy.

Bring focus back to your Self

Take focus off them and bring focus to you and your life. Time in nature, a walk – while practicing connectedness with Self.

I would have paid $300 to shift this feeling

When I was deep inside this state, I would have paid $300 if I knew someone could help me move the pain.

Not because I needed them to tell me the other person was bad. Not because I needed a strategy to win them back.

I wanted someone to express the depth of my feelings to who could handle it AND navigate it with me.

I wanted to be able to say everything I hadn’t been able to say. I wanted help reaching the needs underneath the obsession. And I wanted someone who understood the attachment loop well enough to help me separate real connection from the nervous-system crisis happening around it.

Because when you’re in the spiral, being told to “focus on yourself” usually isn’t enough. You already know that. The problem is that, in that moment, you can’t feel yourself.

The work is not forcing yourself to stop caring about the other. It is in caring more about your Self. The work is not in caring less about the other. It is in caring more about your Self. (which one is better)

This isn’t about becoming unaffected

The aim isn’t to become cold, detached or so independent that nobody can hurt you – that would be the avoidant swing that actually happens to many anxiously attached people (link)

It is to reach a point where you can miss someone without abandoning yourself. Where you can feel disappointed without your day being ruined. Where their silence may hurt, but it doesn’t immediately become evidence that you’re unchosen and unworthy.

The connection can matter.

The loss can hurt.

But you remain anchored in your own life. And your life can still begin returning to you before they ever speak again. (i think the first line is better)

Are you inside the spiral right now? The attachment quiz can help you identify the pattern you’re running. The workshop goes further into the moment where activation becomes checking, chasing and self-abandonment — and how to interrupt it.

Quick answers

What is attachment activation?

Attachment activation is the state that can occur when an important connection feels threatened, uncertain or unavailable. For an anxiously attached person, the nervous system begins searching for safety through contact, reassurance, analysis or attempts to restore closeness.

Do I need them to talk to me before I can feel better?

No. Their response may give you temporary relief, but your system can begin settling without a reply, explanation or final conversation. The activation is happening inside you, which means there are ways to work with it directly. Often reliefs just allows “the loop” to continue.

Can ChatGPT help?

It can help you name the pattern, organise your thoughts and understand what may be happening. That can be valuable. Human support offers something different: being emotionally witnessed, expressing unmet needs aloud, connecting with someone who has lived this and receiving live reflections on your experience, state, mindset etc.

What does shadow work mean here?

It means meeting the emotions and needs you’ve learned to reject or hide. That may include grief, anger, dependency needs, fear of abandonment and the belief that another person’s availability determines your worth.
